No (more) Excuses.
I DON’T HAVE TIME
I don’t have the $$$$$$
I don’t look that bad, do I?
It’s TOO early.
I’ll start next week, next month, in the Spring……… #side-eye
I’m too out of shape.

I DON’T WANT TO MESS UP MY HAIR!
Say WHAT!?!?!?
Indeed that last one is a super-valid concern for black women. Many of the women in my life invest lots of time and money in their hair and sweat changes up the game. See? I’m fair 🙂
Now… my street team spent last Saturday marketing BN-Fit Boot Camp at every service business we could find in the 5-mile radius of the gym I train for. It was a lady actually in the stylist’s chair at a salon who said “I don’t want to mess up my hair.” To her credit, she was honest and it opened up a healthy shop-wide discussion. One of the stylists chimed in:
“Lots of my clientele invest in their haircare and they want to avoid sweating as much as possible.” But she is an avid runner and works out regularly; her suggestion to those concerned is: “Keep a low-maintenance style… braids, locks, weaves or a natural style.” Don’t let this concern be your EXCUSE for not working out.
Now to address the other issue-slash-concerns — especially TIME. It’s simple: You just have to prioritize. Give up a television show. Give up an hour and a half of sleep. Healthier people have better quality sleep and require less sleep anyway. Whatever you do, just cut out the excuses.

The former KING of Excuses

I have a confession to make. I haven’t excercised (unless you count shopping excercise) since last Wednesday. *GASP* A part of the reason is complete laziness
telling the truth and SHAMING the deviland my sinuses acting up but another reason is my hair. Now normally I wear my hair curly/natural during the week but I wanted it to be fly for several days during the holidays and too much heat is not a good look. Men have it so easy. Yeah, I said it. However, now I feel guilty so I guess I better do something about it. LOLbnfitdc
I would have never thought you would have hair issues because you have that wash-n-go hair, Le. Don’t kill me for saying that LQTM! Men DONT have it easy — we sit in barbershops and deal with looking scruffy if we don’t shave. We just don’t let it keep us from exercise!!!
(I know I have no real argument, but it was worth a try haha).

Uh huh… eradicated your list, huh? 🙂
Shaune
Have been there, done that with the hair thing. I used to get my hair done every Friday morning so I could at least wear it in a style (other than curly) for the weekend. But it just didn’t make sense to spend $45 or more for style I could only wear for three days because by Monday morning, it was back to working out….style gone. So I’m embracing my natural hair again for this reason. I have to work out, PERIOD! It’s a part of my life so low maintenance hair works for me. No excuses.

“I have to work out, PERIOD!” is goooooooooood, Mother!!! YES YES YES YES. And I hope it’s not TMI, but you have your share of wigs too, so you can workout and slap “one” on.
(FYI: Shaune is a GREAT friend and a professional makeup artist (MUA) who works in fashion for a living… wigs are no biggie… so I wasn’t blasting her out about wigs LQTM. Check out her makeup and lifestyle blog: http://shadesofshaune.wordpress.com/ )

Nona
Love the blog on excuses. Very true. Partnership helps us to overcome struggles and this especially true in the area of fitness and exercise. Research backs this up.

Thank you, Nona. Partnership changes the dynamics of responsibility, accountability and motivation — you push each other.
Perhaps BN-Fit and For This Cause can do some partnering this year on a health screening.

what discourages me from goingtto the gym – if i wanted to use an excuse (this is going to sound weird but funny) is my hair… I am approaching my first year of locks, and the goal is to keep it tight and dry, once it sweats, it gets fuzzy and crazy looking. When i sweat, i sweat hard and pouring (seemingly). I want to put a scarf/hat on but that makes it worst, my hair is still wet, im close to going to the gym with a shower cap (LOL), because the shower is another experience in itself….. i hate smelly hair… any suggestions ladies? I am not cutting it either… too early lol
bnfitdc
Well there you have it. I hadn’t considered the brethren that deal with “bad hair days”….
Praying you make it out of your first year without a belly #side-eye.
